👜 What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag

A practical guide for first-time moms + free printable checklist

Wondering what to pack in your hospital bag? Getting ready for the big day can feel exciting (and slightly overwhelming). This guide will help you bring everything you truly need — without overpacking. I’ll share what worked for me and what you can skip, plus a printable checklist you can download at the end!

👩‍🍼 What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag for Mom

The hospital provides some basics, but bringing your own items helps you feel more comfortable and at ease during labor and postpartum recovery.

Here’s what I packed and loved:

  • Comfy nightgowns or nursing-friendly pajamas

  • Slippers or non-slip socks

  • Nursing bras and high-waisted underwear

  • Loose outfit to go home in (remember: you’ll still look 6 months pregnant!)

  • Toiletries: toothbrush, hairbrush, shampoo, deodorant, etc.

  • Towel and nursing pillow (if you prefer your own)

  • Long phone charger

  • Healthy snacks and a water bottle

  • Postpartum diapers

According to the Mayo Clinic, bringing familiar items from home can help reduce stress during your hospital stay.

👶 What to Pack for Baby

Even though the hospital provides some newborn items, packing a few things of your own will help you feel prepared and excited.

  • 2–3 outfits (for newborn photos, going home, and just in case)

  • Swaddle or receiving blanket

  • Car seat (make sure it’s properly installed before you arrive)

  • Baby wipes, diapers and diaper cream

  • Bottles and formula (if you’re not breastfeeding)

👨‍👩‍👧 What to Pack for Your Partner or Support Person

Your partner will be supporting you during a long and emotional process, so it’s important that they feel ready and comfortable too.

  • Change of clothes and a hoodie or sweater

  • Snacks and drinks

  • Phone charger

  • Important documents, birth plan, or contact list

💡 Helpful Tips I Learned as a New Mom
  • I packed my hospital bag around 35 weeks. (In case your baby wants to come early)

  • Labeled Ziploc bags helped organize baby’s outfits.

  • A long charger was a lifesaver.

  • Bringing my own cozy blanket and pillow helped me relax during labor.
