☀️ When Can a Baby Go to the Pool or the Beach?
Our Summer Experience, Tips & Essentials 🌺
Summer is here, and it felt like the perfect time to talk about a topic many moms ask: When is it safe to take my baby to the pool or beach?
I personally love the water. I couldn’t wait to see my baby’s reaction to her first pool day! I wanted her to feel comfortable in the water, not afraid, but respectful of it from a young age. She went for the first time at 6 months old, after I got the green light from her pediatrician and did lots of reading on the topic.
📅 When Is It Safe to Start?
My pediatrician recommended waiting until 6 months old, which is also the age when babies can start using sunscreen and their immune system is stronger. Before that, public or shared pools are not safe.
Also, if the weather is too hot, it can be risky for younger babies and even for us adults — so safety comes first!
🌊 Preparing Baby for the Pool
To help her get used to the water, I started gently splashing during bath time. A few drops on her face, gentle games in the tub… it helped her stay calm and happy.
On our first pool day, she didn’t use a float. I kept her in my arms, introduced her slowly to the water, and made it playful.
Eventually, I added a baby float just to help hold her weight — but I always stay by her side holding the flotty and the baby. A float is not a replacement for supervision.
🛳️ Baby float recommendation: Cute, safe & affordable. Find it in my pool favorites here.
🪬 Sun Safety & Skincare for Baby
Once she turned 6 months, I started using Aveeno Baby Sunscreen SPF 50. It’s gentle, smells good, and lasts a long time!
💊 BEFORE The Pool / Sun
Goal: protect your baby’s skin from chlorine, salt, and sun
Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer or barrier ointment to:
Face
Arms & Legs
Neck & folds (like behind the knees)
Great choices:
Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment
Weleda Calendula Face Cream
CeraVe Baby Moisturizing Cream ✨ (my fave!)
Mustela Hydra Bébé Facial Cream
Then, apply a mineral sunscreen:
Thinkbaby SPF 50+
Blue Lizard Baby SPF 50+
Badger Baby SPF 40
My top pick: Aveeno Baby Sunscreen!
🌞 AFTER The Pool / Beach / Sun
Goal: wash away chlorine/salt + deeply hydrate the skin
After fun in the sun, it’s so important to gently cleanse and hydrate your baby’s skin.
Start with a mild baby wash:
🪦 Aveeno Baby Wash & Shampoo
💦 Johnson’s Baby Shampoo
Pat dry with a soft towel (don’t rub!), and follow with a rich cream or natural oil (like organic coconut oil — if no allergies).
My favorite post-swim moisturizers:
CeraVe Baby Moisturizing Lotion ✨
Eucerin Baby Eczema Relief
Mustela Nourishing Lotion with Cold Cream
Weleda Calendula Body Lotion
I personally love the CeraVe Baby Lotion — it’s calming, clean, and leaves her skin baby-soft!
🚿 Swim Diapers & Feeding Essentials
We use Huggies Little Swimmers, but you can also use reusable swim diapers or modify a regular one (not my favorite hack, but works in emergencies!).
Also, don’t forget water (if your baby is already drinking it), and bring breastmilk or formula in a cooler if you’re staying out for long. I usually bring breastmilk in a bottle — my baby doesn’t mind it cold!
If needed, I warm it with tap water in a bathroom (mini water bath trick!).
🌿 Other Must-Haves
🍷 Long-sleeve swimsuit (extra protection)
🏡 Stroller with good sunshade (I use the Summer 3D Convenience stroller and love it!)
